Herbie – the Disney Volkswagen Beetle – goes 120.000 km around the world

On January 15, 2012 by MarcF

Remember Herbie, the anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney motion pictures among which ´Herbie, the love bug´, ´Herbie rides again´ and ´Herbie goes bananas´

Inspired by this epic Diney creation, an Austrian couple, owning a replica Herbie VW beetle from 1963 powered by 34 horse powers (1,200 cc) and pulling a 1985 Qek camper drove its ´love bug´ more than 120.000km around the world.

Domi and Zainab have been on the road since September 2009 traveling through 47 nations on four continents, while covering all the 48 continental United States. They have already driven more than 75,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) in their beloved Herbie.

It all started when Domi bought a 1963 VW beetle painted a natural beige color. A friend remarked the similarity with ´Herbie the love bug´.

That sounded fun so he went online for stickers and striping to replicate the Herbie paint job.
Since a beetle can only pull a very small trailer he went looking for a suitable caravan. He ended up with a classic Eastern German QEK caravan from 1984. Being both light and a stylish match for Herbie it turned out to be a perfect match.

As of January 2012 Herbie and its drivers are underway to drive all around South America. Maybe this  leg of their trip, adding a couple of thousand extra kilometers to their already impressive voyage, should simply be called “Herbie goes (to the land of) bananas” or “Herbie rides again”!?
