The winter of 2012/13 was a very special one for Sofie Wagenaar and Remco Reuver. The flatlanders from the Netherlands decided to go on a skiing holiday. Not your average week-long ski trip. No they wanted to live their dream by skiing in 30 different countries, covering 30.000 km overland in their car in half a year’s time!
They prepped their Mercedes Vaneo for winter conditions in the likes of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Norway and took off on a trip they dubbed Ski For Wishes. Firstly cause they would be living their own dream and secondly cause along the way they would be raising awareness and money for the ‘Make-A-Wish’ charity. ‘Make-a-Wish’ is a charity that Grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. A great trip with a great cause!
They started their trip in Holland driving through the Alps and skiing many welknown resorts over there. After they continued through the balkan, Turkey, Georgia into Iran and onwards to the not well known “Stans” (e.g. Kazachstan,..). Then up through Russia to Scandinavia and down back to Holland. The entire trip took them around half a year and many damaged ski edges.
Sofie and Remco about their trip:
“It was an amazing adventure where we were exposed to many new cultures, impressive nature and amazing powder runs. To make our dream trip more meaning full we decided to raise money and awareness for the Make-a-wish foundation.
We also teamed up with Gear4Guides, a foundation that provides ski gear and knowledge to developing skiing nations. In cooperation with them we brought childeren ski gear and toys to a starting ski school in Arslanbob, Kyrgyzstan.
After we got back from our trip we auctioned all our gear and raised close to €4635 for Make-a-wish. All in all a very productive and amazing experience and it was worth every snowflake”
