There is only one way to describe Nick Sanders: The world’s most kickass cycling, motorbiking and boating Adventurer!
He is by far the most experienced global circumnavigator of all times. Not only on a motorbike, but also on a normal leg powered bicycle. Get ready to be amazed and impressed:
Nick Sanders has motorcycled around the world 7 times including two record circumnavigations of the globe. He has motorcycled up and down the Americas 7 times, to make him the most experienced solo motorcycle adventurer in the world. Nick holds both the record for riding around the world in 19 days and 4 hours, and also the record for the double transit of the Americas (Alaska to Ushuaia and back) in 46 days. All this motocycling madness makes him the ‘fastest man around the world’!
Yet this “ordinary man in his extraordinary world,” as he describes himself, also held the record for bicycling around the world, which he did twice. The second time, in 1984, Sanders set the the original and first RTW cycling record, riding over 13,000 miles (20,900 km) around the Northern hemisphere in 78 days. In 2003, Guinness changed the rules to require at least 18,000 miles (29,000 km) by land and at least another 8,000 miles (12,900 km) by sea or air, via two antipodal points. The changes invalidated Sanders’s record. However Sanders still holds the Guinness World Record for fastest ride around the coast of Great Britain, riding a verified 4,800 miles (7,720 km) in 22 days.
Eventually Sanders round the world cycling record was broken in 2005 by both Steve Strange and Phil White and in 2008 by ‘THE MAN WHO CYCLED THE WORLD, Mark Beaumont’
Sanders found new challenges by cycling to the source of the Nile, across the Sahara to Timbuktu and the full length of South America!
To diversify his adventuring status even more he also took two narrowboats (a boat of a distinctive narrow design, made to fit the narrow canals of Great Britain) across the English Channel and along the entire length of the River Danube to the Black Sea
Now that his record driving expeditions are over Sandes leads client expeditions across the Himalayas, from London to Timbuktu, around the world, and extensively along the full length of the Americas, from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska.
He has written 8 books and produced 15 DVD’s about his travels, and has sold television programs to broadcast media for 15 years.
Among the books he published are:
- Sanders, Nick (1988). The great bike ride: around the world in 80 days
- Sanders, Nick (1989). Short summer in South America.
- Sanders, Nick (1999). Fastest Man Around the World.
- Sanders, Nick (2004). Loneliness of the Long Distance Biker.
You might wanne grab one of those if you plan any overland RTW journey on your own wheels!
Nick Sanders has rightfully earned him the title of Kickass Adventurer and a spot in our kickasstrips gallery!
