On July 2, 1937 famed aviator Amelia Earhart went missing over the Pacific. At the time, she and her copilot Fred Noonan, were attempting to circumnavigate the globe aboard her Lockheed Electra aircraft when they somehow got off course, were unable to find their refueling station at Howland Island, and were never seen or heard from again. In the years that followed, the ultimate fate of Earhart and Noonan has been one of the most enduring mysteries of the 20th century, with search teams still hoping to locate their final resting place to this day.
Fast forward to 2014 and another Amelia Earhart made it her mission to complete her namesakes journey. While not a direct relation to Amelia Mary Earhart of 1937 fame, Amelia Rose Earhart was inspired by her namesake to set big goals to achieve in life. Earhart has been a pilot since 2010 and worked as a professional newscaster in the Los Angeles and Denver metropolitan areas. Amelia, along with co-pilot Shane Jordan, selected the Pilatus PC-12 NG as their aircraft of choice for the 18-day, 24,300 nautical mile long journey.
Dubbed the Amelia Project, 31-year old Amelia Rose Earhart took off from Oakland, California and made steady progress on her circumnavigation. Her flight path took her to Denver, then on to Miami, before turning south towards Trinidad and Tobago, and on to Brazil. After a brief stop there, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean, flew across Africa with a stop in Senegal, before arriving in Tanzania. From there she aviated to the Seychelles, Maldives, Singapore, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati (where her predecessor may have gone missing!), Hawaii, and then back to her starting point in Oakland.
On Jul 11, 2014 – 77 years after the original tragic journey – Amelia Rose Earhart returned to her flight origin, Oakland International Airport, and “closed the flight plan” of the original Amelia Mary Earhart. In doing so, Amelia Rose Earhart became the youngest woman to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft, and drew attention to her foundation that funds flight scholarships for young women interested in pursuing a career in aviation.
A daring and very kickass undertaking. In the same league as German teenager Matthias Rust’s 1987 stunt where he flew his plane – in the midst of the cold war – across the Iron Curtain and landed it in the middle of Moscow’s Red Square!!
Earheart’s trip was a little less politically loaded and didn’t get her into a Russian prison. Kickass inspiring nonetheless.
By recreating and symbolically completing Amelia Mary Earhart’s flight around the world, I hope to develop an even deeper connection to my namesake and also encourage the world to pursure their own adventures. Amelia believed that, ‘adventure is worthwhile in itself’ and it is that type of attitude that spurs us to seek the unknown, push our limits and fly outside the lines.
