Travelers around the world are showing more and more of their skin while trying to shoot a memorable photo or video of a beautiful vista or a world famous monument. It’s all for the sake of originality or just pure ‘bare butt’ fun. And it is getting hugely popular!
Next in line is Amichay Rab with his “My Naked Trip” SOuth and Latin America tour.
That this form of ‘strip down tourism’ is indeed a rising trend becomes clear looking in the kickasstrips archives for ‘dress less’ travel exploits. Famous (and notorious) examples include The Naked Handstander, the girls of the Topless Travel Tour, the Naked Bike Riders and the annual No-Pants Subway Ride.
The increasing popularity of this “birthday suit tourism” may have been sparked by Israeli Amichay Rab, founder of the website mynakedtrip.com.
Amichay Rab’s “My Naked Trip”
After his military service Rab went on a backpacking trip around Latin and South America in 2007. He decided to spice things up a bit and took pictures of himself stripped down to the skin with famous landmarks in the background.
According to his site, Rab was forced to strip down to his dreadlocks because “some places were really hot and I had to do something about it…” like on the salt expanses of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni.
When it came to the cold places Rab also had a good reply: “It definitely was easier to take the photos because there was less to hide. Definitely the coldest place was National Park Aconcagua in Argentina. 4300ms above sea level, surrounded only by ice. And a naked me of course. “
David Goldsmith, a British immigrant to Israel, met Rab in Buenos Aires while on a tour of the Estadio Alberto J. Armando Stadium, or “La Bombonera,” home to Boca Juniors — one of Argentina’s most successful soccer teams. At the end of the tour, which lasted no more than half an hour, Rab told Goldsmith he had a confession to make.
“Amichay explained to me, ‘I am taking naked photos of myself in famous places around South America,’” Goldsmith told Times of Israel. “‘Would you mind using my camera to take a shot of me here?’” Goldsmith agreed, and Rab proceeded to undress on the spot.
Thoughtfully, Rab’s photos never expose his “little Rab”.
“Ï learned to be pretty sneaky and quiet….and fast cause it only takes me about 5 seconds to get naked”
Where did Rab get naked?
Rab’s naked trip brought him to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Peru and Uruguay.
He has gotten quite creative with the angles and shot compositions.
Sometimes it is almost a ‘where is wally?’ type of mission to find him somewhere in the picture.
And sometimes it is a full on naked Rab that you just can’t miss.
A selection of his best shots:
Machu Picchu nakedness on the rise
Logically Rab had to get naked at South America’s most famous tourist site: Machu Picchu. But watch out for more bare butts when traveling to Machu Picchu — incidents of “naked tourism” at the 15th-century Inca citadel are on the rise, and getting under the skin of Peru officials. A couple of streaking incidents (including Rab’s) made the Peru’s Ministry of Culture denounce the spectacle of nude visitors at Machu Picchu as “disrespectful” and “unfortunate events that threaten cultural heritage.” And they are cracking down on it.
According to the Peruvian Times, four American tourists were detained on March 14, 2014 for getting naked and posing for photos at the site.
In a pair of separate incidents earlier in the week, two Canadians and two Australians were detained for stripping down for pictures at Machu Picchu.
The bare-it-all episodes followed a 2013 incident in which a naked couple was videotaped by other tourists while streaking across Machu Picchu’s grass field and bounding down a stone staircase like a pair of adolescent antelopes
Many in Peru have accused streakers of disrespecting the country’s cultural heritage, but Rab insists he didn’t mean to offend.
“I did it while no one was around and with the clarity that this is a sacred place for Peruvians, before all, with much respect,” Rab told BBC Mundo.
A pretty white butt
When coming back to Israel after his naked trip Rab had to set some new goals. His kickass answer to that: “…a lot of people told me that I need to work on my white butt, so I will probaly start with that.”
