Latitude parallels have inspired many a traveler to follow one of these iconic horizontal lines that you see every time you look at a world map. Some well known examples are Mike Horn’s ‘Latitude Zero Expedition’, Simon Reeve’s trips along the 0°, 23° North and 23° South parallels (also known as the Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn) and David and Janet Carle who traveled around the world following the 38th parallel.
Well Swiss native Milo Zanecchia also got inspired by these horizontal map lines. Long having had a fascination for Mongolia he noticed that Mongolia is actually located on the same latitude as his home of Switzerland. This got him thinking to make a trip following this latitude 45 degree parallel all the way to the land of Yurts and Genghis Kahn. Together with his girlfriend and a befriended couple they geared up a 4×4 Land Cruiser Prado and a Land Rover Defender 110 and embarked on a kickass roadtrip half-way across the globe.
Being a professional filmmaker Zanecchia saw this as a great opportunity to shoot a travel inspiration video of their journey. Along the way, the filmmaker captured thousands of fantastic images. The route they took led them from Switzerland to Italy, on a ferry to Greece after which they drove on to Turkey.
After having shot a promo video for friends who recently opened a hotel in the South of Turkey they went on to what proved to be “the most hospitable and welcoming country” Georgia.
Across the mountainous Caucasus they reached the Caspian sea where they took the legendary ferry to Aktau in Kazakhstan. The ferry is notorious among RTW (round the world) overland travelers for its unpredictable and irregular departures hence timing and patience are very important.
From Aktau Zanecchia and friends drove 2500km through the desert of Kazakhstan before reaching the mountains of Kyrgyzstan where they spent almost three weeks.
The last part of their trip brought them back into Kazakhstan, a short two day transition across Russia – in which they had to cover 1500km due to visa constraints – before entering the Latitude 45 end goal of Mongolia.
All in all an amazing roadtrip which took them 90 days and which they covered grantly in the resulting inspirational travel video
