India is one of those great countries to travel and adventure about. Surprisingly, Bollywood, the county’s massive movie industry however, is not known for its travel or adventure films. But indeed there are some gems. And Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (English: You won’t get this life again) is one of those. It is a fantastic travel and adventure film involving a big roadtrip coupled with adventure sports and well-known events like the running with Bulls in Pamplona and La Tomatina in Valencia.
In true ‘Hangover’ meets Vikas-Krishna-Barcelona spirit, the film deals with a bachelor roadtrip adventure marinated with stories of finding, losing and forgetting love. A very kickass film indeed!
Bollywood roadtrip movie: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
The Bollywood film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – which hit the screens on the 15th of July 2011 – follows three friends, Arjun (played by Hrithik Roshan), Kabir (Abhay Deol), and Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) who have been inseparable since childhood. Kabir (Abhay Deol), an affluent construction tycoon is about to take the marital plunge. But not before he completes a much-postponed trip with school buddies, investment banker (and constantly grumpy) Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) and freestyle flirt Imraan (Farhan Akhtar). Arjun and Imraan decide to take him on a road trip through Spain instead of throwing a traditional bachelor party.
When they set off to Spain, to confirm their long-standing pact, each of them will have to pick an adventure sport that all three have to do. The friends fly to Spain separately, where they plan to visit Costa Brava, Seville, and Pamplona by car.
Deep sea diving & la Tomatina
When they arrive Kabir reveals that he has chosen deep sea diving as their first sport which turns in quite the adventure for Arjun, who cannot swim and is aquaphobic. Their pretty diving instructor Laila enchanted the boys and manages to help Arjun overcome his fear of water. She then invites the boys to attend the tomato throwing La Tomatina festival held in Buñol.
As the filming took place outside of the La Tomatina season (which is in August) the La Tomatina festival of Buñol was re-created for the song “Ik Junoon“. Almost sixteen tons of tomatoes worth ₹10 million (US$150,000) were flown in from Portugal for the shoot.
Next the trio visit Seville, where, after some standard Bollywood love entanglements, they go for sky diving, as per Arjun’s choice. During the adventure, Imraan is forced to confront his acrophobia and hesitates to take part. However, they complete it without any obstacles. After skydiving, the three men go to a bar and get into a fight with a stranger on whom they had tried to pull a prank. They are jailed after the fight. Salman bails them out and takes them to his home.
‘Running with the bulls’ in Pamplona
Next the trio leave for the ‘running with the bulls’ event in Pamplona, which was Imraan’s choice. On the morning of the bull run, Imraan suggests they make a pact to make a promise if they survive the event. Imraan vows to publish his poetry (he was secretly a poet), Arjun vows to go to Morocco with Laila (the dive instructor he has fallen in love with), and Kabir promises to tell Natasha that he is not ready to marry her. As they complete the event, the friends gain a renewed sense of their relationships with each other, with others they know, and with themselves.
In true Bollywood tradition the film ends on this happy cheesy note.
All in all a great entertaining watch that can easily be labeled as Bollywood’s best roadtrip travel movie. You can see the entire three hour long movie here:
